It still happens after so many years
The loss of forest cover remains as worrisome as it ever was. Although estimates of Amazon deforestation vary by source, there is general agreement that 10% to 12% of the forest in all countries in the Amazon region has already disappeared.
In Brazil, deforestation is measured annually by the government. The official estimate is that approximately 18% of the Brazilian Amazon has already been deforested.
Deforestation rates vary from one Amazonian country to another. This is mainly because the factors that cause this process in the region also vary.
In Brazil, for example, it is common for the clear cut of the forest to be done to make way for pastures for cattle on large and medium-sized farms. In other countries, however, the forest is usually occupied by small farmers.
Deforestation is particularly accentuated in areas adjacent to urban centers, roads and rivers.
However, even remote areas, where no human activity is known, already show signs of suffering human pressure, especially in places where there is mahogany and gold.
But not all deforestation is illegal. A certain amount of deforestation on private property can be legal.
According to the Forest Code of Brazil, each landowner can clear-cut 20% of the Amazon forest on their property, subject to authorization from environmental agencies.
