The northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) is the largest exclusively Brazilian mammal and ranks 12th among the most endangered primates. Exclusively from the Atlantic Forest (it only occurs in this vegetation formation), the species suffers from hunting and, mainly, with the destruction of its habitat, often reduced to small fragments insufficient for its survival. Today it can only be found in the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, but its occurrence has already been recorded in southern Bahia.
As they are very docile animals, they received the name Muriqui, which in Tupi means 'quiet people'. Highly sociable, the northern muriquis show some behaviors that are different from those of other primate species.
