There are two main types of diabetes, caused by different factors. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body destroys insulin-producing cells by recognizing them as foreign bodies. Type 2 diabetes is caused by the constant production of insulin by the pancreas and the cells' inability to metabolize glucose.
In Brazil, diabetes affects 5 to 6 million people between 30 and 69 years old and, according to the National Association for Diabetic Assistance, this number can reach 10 million (the equivalent of 10% of the population in this age group), if the non-patients are considered. diagnosed. Diabetes is still the leading cause of lower limb amputations. The main risk factors for patients with type 2 disease are age 45 years or older, family history and overweight.
