Anyone who wants to know the historical heritage of Minas Gerais has gained a new tool: the Digital atlas of movable and immovable property registered by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute
(Iphan). Presented on CD-Rom and also in book form, the Atlas provides information on 216 properties, such as churches, chapels and farms distributed over 46 municipalities in the state. In order to produce the material, intense fieldwork was necessary, as the geographer João Francisco de Abreu, coordinator of the project, recounts. “There were more than 100 excursions. We visited the sites, took pictures and talked to residents and city hall agents to know how the goods were used and maintained, in addition to researching other historical aspects in documents."
The results obtained through these trips were digitized using geographic information systems (GIS), which allowed the researchers enter the precise location of the assets (such as altitude, latitude and longitude), assemble maps and combine them with other information, such as tipping date and style architectural. Abreu adds that the work required the development of new softwares and computing techniques, which may be useful for further research in the area.
Interactively structured, with different search options, the Atlas, which is bilingual (Portuguese and English), is aimed at tourists as well as at schools, libraries and Iphan itself.
