Main cultural and architectural symbol of the State, the Teatro Amazonas, located in Largo de São Sebastião, in the center of Manaus, keeps alive much of the history of the rubber cycle, the capital's golden age Amazonian. Inaugurated on December 31, 1896, the Theater surprises and enchants with its grandeur.
Listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1966, Teatro Amazonas preserves part of the original architecture and decoration. The architectural style is Renaissance, with eclectic details. Outside, the famous dome draws attention for its exuberance, made up of 36,000 pieces in the colors of the Brazilian flag, imported from Alsace, France. Most of the material used in the construction of the theater was imported from Europe: the steel walls of Glasgow, Scotland; the 198 chandeliers and Carrara marble on the stairs, statues and columns are from Italy.
The concert hall has a capacity for 701 people, distributed between the audience and three cabin floors. It's impossible not to be mesmerized by the concave ceiling, on which there are four canvases painted in Paris by the traditional Casa Carpezot. The screens represent music, dance, tragedy and opera. The latter is a tribute to the Brazilian composer Carlos Gomes. In the center, a majestic French bronze chandelier. The masks on the columns in the audience, which honor composers and playwrights, among them, Aristophanes, Molière, Rossini, Mozart and Verdi, also do not go unnoticed.
The Mouth Cloth of Teatro Amazonas is another rarity. It was made in 1894 by the Brazilian artist Crispim do Amaral and depicts the meeting of the Negro and Solimões rivers.
In the Salão Nobre, where the great social events of the time took place, the ceiling painting is highlighted. made by Domenico de Angelis, in 1899, and which was named “The glorification of the Bellas Artes da Amazon”.
