Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca was born in Alagoas, on August 5, 1827. He is an important historical figure for our country, as he was the one who proclaimed the Republic and became our first president.
Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca, as he became known, was a military man and, from an early age, he was involved in the wars that the country participated and in the movement for the liberation of slaves. He studied at a military school since he was 16 years old. At 21, he participated in the Praieira Revolution. Afterwards, he acted in other conflicts, such as the expeditionary brigade to the Rio de la Plata, the siege of Montevideo and the Paraguayan War.
In 1885, he governed the province of Rio Grande do Sul and was the leader of the Army's anti-slavery movement.
In 1889, Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca proclaimed the Brazilian Republic and assumed the position of first president of Brazil.
