Birds lose scientists for cell phone costs

The birds flew to places where the tracker operator had no coverage

Russian scientists monitoring eagles ran out of money to continue their research after the animals flew away in October. That's because the group put trackers on the birds, and they ended up going to places where the responsible mobile operator charged a higher fee to operate.

Researchers monitor steppe eagles because they are threatened with extinction, so they can keep track of what dangers __________ birds are in when they are flying.

Twelve times a day, scientists receive text messages by cell phone with the location of the birds, sent by the tracker. Two eagles flew to Iran, which made the operator charge about 439 reais more per day to operate for each of them. Two others also contributed to the group's credit ended faster: one went to Tajikistan and the other to Turkmenistan.

However, the research managed to find a way to suffer less from the damage: by spreading the story, the organization made many people understand the situation and offer to help. Thus, scientists raised more than 15 thousand reais to continue with the research until the end of 2019.
