NAME:

Victor and his brother

It wasn't persecution. The teacher was careful to treat all her students the same way, at least she made an effort to do so. But with Vitor, she was always on the back foot. Vitinho was a case apart.
– What is the population of Brazil?
A student raised his hand and read the answer from the book.
– One hundred and twenty million.
Vitor raised his hand. The teacher felt an emptiness in her stomach. Here he came.

– What is it, Vitinho?
– One hundred and twenty-one million.
– Why, Vitinho?
– My mom had a baby this week.
A giggle ran through the room, but Vitor was serious. He was always serious.
– How many children did your mother have, Vitor?
- So far?
- Not this time.
– One. But a big one.
Another giggle, like ripples on the surface of a lake.
So it's not a hundred and twenty-one million. It's a hundred and twenty million and one.
The teacher wrote the number on the blackboard. Then she pointed to the one at the end of the number and said:
– This one is your little brother, Vitor.
Later even before Vitor spoke, she realized how lonely that one looked at the end of so many zeros.
– Poor little brother.
– Vitor… It is clear that this number is not exact. There are people being born and dying all the time...
– There in the hospital was full of children. Have they already told?
– I don't know, Vitor, I…
– Put on another two or three to accompany my brother, aunt.
She had to laugh along with the others.
– You, huh, Vitinho? With you I have to always stay on the back foot.
– Be careful not to fall forward, aunt.
– Arrive, Victor!
