Meteorologists still don't fully understand how a tornado is born. The most destructive tornadoes in history arose from supercells, a kind of thunderstorm that circles ________. The causes of a tornado are believed to be explained primarily by things that happen in and around the storm. Supercells also tend to produce lots of lightning, hail and floods.
When tornadoes pass over vegetation or a building, they tear off pieces that they carry with them. The accumulation of dust, mist and debris is what gives a dark color to the air column that makes up the phenomenon.
Have you ever watched the movie Twister? Remember the scene where a cow flies over a pickup truck thanks to the force of the winds? Yeah, there are a lot of weird stories involving tornadoes...
Although it can last for up to an hour, most tornadoes are no more than ten minutes long. Thus, despite the great speed of its winds, the radius of destruction of a tornado is much smaller than that of a hurricane.
