When flying, the female firefly blinks to warn the male that he may be approaching her for mating. The flasher also serves to scare enemies, because every time the light flashes, a toxic substance is produced in the firefly's body.
Since many fireflies have toxins in their bodies, they are unpalatable prey. The light signal serves to warn the predator that the food is not the best.
