NAME:
the ghost doctor
This story has been told from father to son in the city of Belém do Pará. It all started on a full moon night on a summer Saturday. Two boys were talking sitting on the porch of one of their houses.
"Do you believe in ghosts?" asked the youngest.
"Not me!" said the other.
- Yes, believe it! - insisted the youngest.
'You bet it's not,' replied the other.
- All right. I bet my soccer ball you don't dare go into the cemetery at night.
"Oh yeah?" said the boy who had been challenged. – Well then, let's go to the cemetery and I'll prove my courage.
So the two boys walked to the cemetery street. The gate was closed. The silence was profound. It was so dark… They started to feel scared.
To win the bet, you had to cross the street and knock your hand on the cemetery gate. The boy who had accepted the challenge ran. He stopped in front of the gate and started making faces at his friend. Then he leaned against the gate and tried to smack it with his hand. That's when he realized the shirt was stuck.
- Help! Somebody help me! - he yelled, fainting then.
Just then, an old man appeared from the back of the cemetery, opened the gate and called the other boy.
“Your friend caught his shirt sleeve at the gate and fainted from fear. Poor thing thought some ghost was holding him.
The boy noticed that the old man was very thin, almost transparent.
- Thanks. What's your name?
– I'm the doctor here. I'll wake up your friend.
The old man ran his hand over the unconscious boy's head and he woke up instantly.
“Go home, my children,” he said. – It's past bedtime.
The next day, the boys went to the old man to thank him for his help. But they didn't find him, not in the cemetery or anywhere else. And that's how they both lost their fear of ghosts, when they realized that not all mysterious beings do evil. On the contrary, they can even help. Like that doctor, who never showed up again.
