the success of the suitcase
I breathe hard. I have a small suitcase in my hands and a diary that is jingling again. It's my first day of school. I come to replace a teacher who had to be absent “due to force majeure”. I shyly enter the staff room and am stared at by everyone. One of the colleagues, trying to make me more comfortable, asks:
– Are you the one who came to replace Edith?
'Yes,' I answer in a thin voice.
– Speak loudly, dear, otherwise you'll be swallowed up by the students – and you burst out laughing.
And the whole team has fun with my face.
- She has no idea what to expect, is not it?
Invited to sit down, I accept so as not to appear unsympathetic. They continue to talk as if I'm not there. Until, finally, the bell rings. It's time to start class. I pick up my stuff and realize that they are looking at me curiously to see what I have in my suitcase. Before they ask me, I pick up my pace and head to the classroom. I walk in and see a bunch of curious little eyes studying me, then turning to the briefcase. I place it on the table and open it without letting them see what's inside.
– What do you have there, teacher?
- Soon you will know.
At the end of the day, I close my suitcase, gather my things and leave. The next day, I behave the same way, and the next and the next… Classes go well and I feel that I won over the class, who participate with great interest. Teachers no longer stare at me. The suitcase, however, continues to be the target of curious eyes.
I arrive at school on my last day of school. The class holder will return the following week. In the teachers' lounge I hear the question that has been kept for so many days:
– After all, what do you keep so magical inside that suitcase that you managed to change the room in such a short time?
'You can look,' I say, opening the clasp.
– But there's nothing there! – comment.
- The essential is invisible to the eyes. Here I keep my best.
Everyone is looking at me. They seem to be thinking about what I said. I get my stuff, say goodbye and leave.
