lion face, squirrel size

Of all the Brazilian animals threatened with extinction, he is the one that draws the most international attention. It is the symbol of the conservation of the environment in the country. Another tip: its mane is a lion, but the size of a squirrel. Do you already know who it is?

The lion tamarin is an animal found only in Brazil, in regions of the Atlantic Forest. It is part of the group of primates, the same as the monkeys. But it is much smaller than its cousins – the adult measures about two feet from the head to the tip of the tail, weighing between 360 and 710 grams, while the chick usually weighs around 60 grams.

Lion Tamarins have golden or black fur. They have claws that are used to dig and look for roots and insects, but they also eat fruit, tree gums, eggs and small animals such as birds and lizards. In nature, they live, on average, from eight to fifteen years. In captivity, however, they can reach 30 years of age!

As territorial animals, lion tamarins walk in groups of four to six individuals, who choose a part of the forest to live in and defend that area from invasion by other groups. At dusk, they like to take refuge in hollow trees or in tangles of vines and bromeliads – time to sleep!

At approximately two years old, the lion tamarins are ready to breed. They then choose a partner and remain faithful to him, which is called monogamy. There are no differences in color or size between male and female.

The breeding season takes place once or twice a year: the first period runs from September to November and the second from January to March. The female's pregnancy lasts just over four months, and at each gestation one to three offspring are born. The newborn is cared for by both the mother and the father.

To protect themselves from their predators, lion tamarins communicate with each other by emitting specific sounds that indicate the presence of jaguars, snakes, hawks and other birds of prey (hunters). But the biggest threat to their survival has actually been the human being.
