Leishmaniasis are diseases caused by specific types of parasites of the genus Leishmania, which can lead to problems with the skin and internal organs such as the liver and spleen. Its transmission happens when female sand flies bite an infected person or animal and start transmitting the disease to other people who are bitten by the same insect. In Brazil, around 30,000 people suffer from this disease – which can be fatal – every year.
