These people lived in the area of what is now Lebanon between 1800 and 600 BC. They spoke a language similar to Hebrew and created the alphabet – the idea of having letters that together produce words and sounds (our alphabet derives from that). The Phoenicians were also dedicated to commercial activity, because they were located in a strategic place on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. They did not form a country, but lived in city-states, that is, they were independent of each other. Phoenician culture began to disappear around 539 BC when Cyrus, king of Persia, conquered the region.
