Learn about the importance of the rabies vaccine and learn how it can prevent rabies in dogs and cats
Although, these days, rabies is considered an uncommon disease, it is still considered a major concern by pet owners. Incurable in animals and fatal in 100% of cases, the disease is a zoonosis and, therefore, it can also affect humans – and the rabies vaccine is, even today, its only form of prevention.
With this in mind, in Brazil, most states and municipalities promote annual campaigns to fight the disease, encouraging pet owners to bring their pets so that the rabies vaccine can be administered. However, as there are still a large number of abandoned animals across the country, the transmission of the disease is not something discarded.
Transmitted through the saliva of contaminated animals, rabies is mainly passed through the bite of sick animals – be they cats or dogs. In dogs and humans, the disease virus can remain incubated for up to 2 months before its symptoms (also very similar) begin to appear; being that, in cats, the disease highlights differentiated signs, but not less aggressive.
