The Smithsonian National Zoo, in Washington DC, in the United States, announced, on Tuesday (13), the birth of a Borneo orangutan. The event was commemorated as this is a critically endangered species.
This was the first time in 25 years that an orangutan of this species, whose scientific name is Pong Pygmaeus, was born in the institution. The species is native to the forests of Borneo and Sumatra.
The male was born on Monday night and has been photographed in tender moments with his mother, named Batang.
