Mushrooms emit light why? That question got a surprising answer in 2015, when we celebrated “The International Year of Light”. It was discovered that the intensity of brightness of some mushrooms endemic to the north-northeast of Brazil, called coconut flower, lights up with maximum intensity at ten o'clock at night. In the coconut groves where they are born, various insects (flies, termites, beetles, wasps) are attracted by the light of these fungi, which land on them, feed, and carry their spores in their paws to disperse them later on the soil of the Woods. This solved part of the puzzle of the function of light in luminous mushrooms: attracting insects, which ends up helping with pollination. Isn't that great?!
