Tom Canty and Edward Tudor are the same age. They are exactly the same. There is only one small difference - Edward is crown prince to the throne of England, and Tom is a beggar, a child in the dank slums of sixteenth-century London. "One day the destiny __________ and both _______ to live, for a while, the life of the other." They change clothes and roles. Tom is taken amidst the pomp and luxury of the court while Edward meets with horror the outcasts, the squalor and the depths of social inequality. Based on the classic theme of changing identities, Mark Twain (1835-1910) – perhaps the greatest accountant in 19th century American stories – masterfully reflects on the human habit of judging people by appearance. And he creates, at the same time, a fable about hypocrisy and injustice as well as an amusing comedy that have brought tears and laughter to successive generations of readers since their publication in 1882.
