When Emerson turned 6, he dropped out of day care and was enrolled in school. Having no one to leave the boy with in the morning, his mother, Rosineide, looked for a place at Obra de Berço. “There, they have adequate food and learn many things”, she says. With Stickler's syndrome, a congenital disease that affects connective tissue, Emerson has problems with vision and coordination. When he arrived at the Obra do Berço, he was silent. Over time, she became more confident. “Today, he plays with friends, plays ball and climbs stairs alone,” says his mother. In bimonthly assemblies, in which the children assisted by the NGO give their opinion on the organization's routine, Emerson stands out. “He always votes and gives his opinion,” says Pâmela Sarmento, the organization's manager. From Monday to Friday, the boy attends computer, arts, citizenship and literature classes. But he doesn't think twice when answering what he likes most: “Playing football!”.
