NAME:
A tribe of Guarany Indians would cut down a piece of forest, plant cassava and corn, but after four or five years, the land did not produce, and due to circumstances, the tribe ended up having to emigrate to another place.
Tired of such wanderings, an old Indian, already very old, refused to go any further and preferred to settle down in the hut.
The youngest of her daughters, the beautiful Jary was between two hearts: to go on, with the young men of her tribe, or staying in solitude, supporting the old man until death took him to the peace of Yvi-Marai.
Despite the young men's pleas, Jary ended up staying with his father.
This attitude of love deserved a reward.
One day, an unknown shaman arrived in those parts and asked Jary what she wanted to make her feel happy. The girl didn't mention it, but the old father asked: he wanted to have his strength renewed so that he could go on and lead Jary to meet the tribe that had left.
She gave the shaman to him a very green plant, scented with kindness, and taught him to plant, harvest the leaves, dry it over the fire, crush it, put the pieces in a porongo, add hot or cold water and sip this infusion. And she said:
– You will have in this new drink a new healthy company even in the sad hours of the cruelest loneliness. Given the recipe she left.
That's how caá-mini was born and raised. From it came the caá-y drink, which the whites later adopted the name of yerba mate, widely used by the gauchos in chimarrão.
Sipping the green sap, the old man regained strength, gained strength and was able to undertake the long journey to rejoin his family.
And the whole tribe adopted the custom of drinking the green grass, bitter and tasty that gave strength and courage and comforted friendship even in the sad hours of the most total solitude.
