So said the shaman Itamotinga:
– Well, Curumim, all things have their history. But there was a time at the beginning of time when all things did not exist, nor did the world exist.
Coaraci glowed all the time and no one slept, as it was always daylight. Animal didn't exist either. Stone spoke, tree spoke and even river spoke.
Well. At that time, the daughter of Cobra Grande, a beautiful wedlock, married a brave warrior. The boy had three Indians who served him all the time.
Well. The warrior was sleepy, he told Cunha to sleep with him. Cunhã said that she could only sleep when night came. And that her father had the night guarded. And send for it at his house.
Then the warrior called the three Indians. I told him to take the canoe and go to Cobra Grande's house.
They went. Canoe on the river, gliding. Canoe stopping. Indians throwing pebbles into the river, in the marked place, where Cobra Grande lived. Big snake appearing with coconut tucumã in hand. Cobra Grande recommending be careful with the coconut. Coco is very dangerous!
The coconut was sealed with tree resin. They couldn't open the coconut. Indians returning in the canoe. Coconut making a little noise. Very curious Indians, wanting to make a hole to spy. Indians making a bonfire in the canoe. Coconut by the fire. Resin melting. The night running away from the coconut and the whole world turning black.
Well. Cunha slept with the warrior during the night. The night had magic, it was turning all things into animals. River stone turning fish. Tree turning paca, armadillo.
Branches turning tuim, I've seen you, macaw…
Well. Nine moons later, Cunha's son was born with the warrior.
And the time of the world was divided in two: day and night.
Coaraci shines in the light. Jaci glows in the dark.
