NAME:
João and Maria were children of very poor woodcutters. They only ate hard bread and that's why their parents decided to leave them in the woods.
That night, João waited for everyone to go to bed and, without making a sound, he got up and filled his pocket with many small stones.
The next morning everyone went to the woods. João walked behind and threw the pebbles on the ground. So they came back following the trail. After a few days, the parents decided to abandon the children again and João had to leave crumbs from his piece of bread.
In the afternoon, when they wanted to go home, they couldn't because the birds had eaten all the bread crumbs.
João and Maria were very scared and, scared to death, they followed a path that took them to a little house far away.
When they got to it, they found it was not like the other houses. It was a little house made entirely of candy.
- Delicious! Hmm! – they said.
A strange little candle soon appeared at the door. Her nose was big and pointed. She invited them in, promising surprises.
The surprise was very sad. The old lady was a witch and she put John inside a cage and made Maria clean the house.
The witch was preparing a broth to cook John. When she went to see if the broth was good, she bent over the cauldron and Maria pushed her away.
Mary took John out of the cage and together they found a great treasure in the witch's house and the rich returned home where their repentant parents welcomed them very happily.
