The most famous mummies in the world are the Egyptian ones. To make those that are preserved until today, the Egyptians used a technique full of details. First, they took out the lungs, the heart, the intestines, the brain and everything else in the body. They washed and dried very well with salt and natron – a compound that absorbs all the water, leaving the body super dry. Then, they wrapped the corpse very well with strips of linen, decorated and perfumed, put on amulets to protect the soul. Mummy ready, time to put it in the sarcophagus – a kind of coffin – and then in the tomb. This is the most famous mummy model out there in movies and museums.
But there are other types of mummies, as many people develop techniques for preserving bodies. The oldest mummies were prepared by the Chinchorro people, who lived in the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile, along the Pacific Ocean.
