Carefully read the text. Then answer the proposed questions:
To meet João, you have to travel along forest trails in the Amazon, through narrow paths, very flooded, and rivers. And as if that weren't enough, it's still necessary to ask a chief for information, because João especially lives in indigenous lands. Who is this John guy? It is the gray-bearded joão, a rare bird that is threatened with extinction.
The gray-bearded joão has a reddish-brown color, with a black throat with white spots, which resembles a… Gray beard! That's why, of course, it got that name. he belongs to the family Furnariidae, the same as joão-de-barro, famous for building their nests with clay.
The greybeard has spent more than 160 years without being seen by scientists and little is known about its habits, only that it feeds mainly on arthropods and builds a very large nest in relation to its size. Today, the total population of the species is estimated by specialists at only five thousand individuals.
As it is very difficult to find, the bird ended up being placed on the list of endangered animals. The species' situation only worsens with the cultivation of rice on the banks of rivers and within indigenous reserves, places where it lives. The cultivation is carried out illegally by non-indigenous farmers, harming the quality of the water and destroying the habitat of the gray-bearded joão.
