Have you ever heard of the Espinhaço Chain? Also called the “Brazilian cordillera”, it is a mountain range with more than 1,000 kilometers in length, connecting the central region of Minas Gerais to the north of Bahia. Due to its great biological, historical, geological and cultural importance, this region is internationally recognized as a Biosphere Reserve. Several stretches are protected in conservation areas such as the Serra do Cipó National Park.
The history of Serra do Cipó began with the formation of the Espinhaço Range, about 2 billion years ago. The human presence came much later: some 10,000 years ago, people arrived there who lived by hunting and gathering fruits and other foods. Skeletons and cave paintings found in this region are among the oldest records of humanity in South America.
Already in the 18th century, the mountains of Serra do Cipó were explored by pioneers in search of gold and precious stones. Roads, trails and old farms still persist in the region as heritage from that time. A little later, in the 19th century, it was the turn of European naturalists to explore Serra do Cipó, attracted by another of its many riches – biodiversity.
Serra do Cipó, as well as the entire Espinhaço Range, has always attracted attention for its unique landscape, formed predominantly by rocky fields. In them, an enormous diversity of plants share space with the rocky outcrops, sets of sharp stones that seem to grow out of the ground, generally pointing in the same direction. But what most calls the attention of researchers in Serra do Cipó is its large number of endemic species, that is, they are found only in this region.
Regarding fauna, about 20 species, including amphibians, lizards, birds and insects are unique to Serra do Cipó. […]
But the great stars of Serra do Cipó are the plants. Once, a famous plastic artist and landscaper named Roberto Burle Marx, enchanted by the beauty and diversity of plants found there, referred to the region as “the garden of Brazil”. […] More than 70 species, including orchids, bromeliads, evergreens, cacti and algae, are endemic to Serra do Cipó. An exclusive and protected garden in the mountains of Minas Gerais.
