I. In 1635, after months of combat, the Dutch defeated the Portuguese-Spanish resistance and seized a large part of the Brazilian Northeast, which they named Nova Holanda.
II. Nova Holanda, expanded its domain areas by gradually incorporating Paraíba, Itamaracá, Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas, among others.
III.To govern the new Dutch colony, the West India Company chose the young and cultured Count Johann Mauritius Van Nassau-Siegen, who belonged to the Orange family and in Brazil was known as Maurício de Nassau.
