The sanctuary's mission is to restore and maintain the elephants' well-being.
Six years ago, ElephantVoices a non-profit organization started its work here in Brazil after identifying that many elephants lived at risk in circuses, zoos and farms rural areas.
It was thinking of looking for an alternative to end this problem that, in March of this year, after a campaign of voluntary funds (crowdfunding), the ElephantVoices and Global Sanctuary for Elephants got together and decided to create a space to house these elephants, dubbed the Elephant Sanctuary of the Brazil.
The site was acquired through donations from international organizations and is the sixth in the world, covering an area of 1,100 hectares of Chapada dos Guimarães.
Initially, the monthly cost is estimated at up to R$20,000 and all the sanctuary's expenses will be supported by donations and international non-governmental organizations.
