Museum on the island of Pará tells how an Italian priest helped make improvements in local communities
Everyone is curious to know Marajó or, at least, to learn more about this immense island located off the coast of Pará, famous for its buffalo breeding and its ancestral culture. The ancient peoples who lived there left us the most beautiful pottery known in Brazil and much admired throughout the world. But today I'm going to write about another Marajoara treasure: the Marajó Museum, have you heard about it?
It was an Italian priest, Giovanni Gallo, who took the initiative to assemble it. When it opened in 1987, in the city of Cachoeira do Arari, the museum brought a lot of hope that it would become a center of attraction for tourists. Father Gallo's words already said: “Our concern is not to collect objects, but culture”. This is exactly what can be seen in the hundreds of interactive pieces that help us to think about the way of life of the marajoara caboclo and his multiple adaptations to this environment.
