Frank Beardsley (Dennis Quaid) is a widower with eight children. When he meets Helen North (Rene Russo), his teenage girlfriend, the thirty years they haven't seen each other immediately vanish. Helen is also a widow and has ten children. Without telling anyone, they decide to get married, but the families cannot understand each other, mainly because of the different upbringing that each group received. While the Beardsleys are disciplined, for the Norths there are no rules. As a result, Helen's kids don't like having to share the same house with a bunch of tidy people, while Frank's kids don't like having the rowdy Norths on their side. Trying to solve the problems, Frank and Helen create a plan that will have everyone working together.
