NAME:

Read:

Why is blood red?

The red color of blood comes from cells called red blood cells or red blood cells.

And they're red because inside them there's a protein called hemoglobin, which has iron atoms in its structure. It is this protein, hemoglobin, linked to iron atoms, that gives the blood its red color.

Surely some of you may have heard of this hemoglobin thing. It is it that receives the oxygen that comes from the air we breathe and takes it to every cell in our body. And this connection of oxygen with hemoglobin takes place through iron atoms.

See? Mom was right again. We have to eat foods rich in iron like meat, beans and spinach. And now you know why! If our body lacks iron, our cells lack hemoglobin and oxygen. And that's called anemia. The anemic child is weak, discouraged, does not want to go to school or even play.

Wow, see? Behind the red of our blood, there's a lot of cool stuff to discover, but I'll stop here.
