It's not just the old and famous cane toad that lives on the riverbank. The gray eagle is another one that lives around there. THE Harpyhalietus coronatus, as it is called by scientists, prefers to inhabit rural areas, but also likes to be close to water, in environments known as gallery forests.
Weighing about three kilos and measuring approximately 66 centimeters in height, this eagle is considered one of the largest in Brazil. Because of the dark gray plumage that covers most of its body, it has become popularly known as the gray eagle. Its wings are long and wide, but its tail is short, with a black tip and a white transverse band. The legs of this bird are yellow and long and the fingers are short. The female is very similar to the male, but a little bigger. Those who have not reached adulthood – the immature ones, as they are called by scientists – have a cream band above the eye and the lower part of the body with whitish streaks.
The gray eagle has a strong voice and to communicate it uses a long repetition of notes that sounds in our ears like a "gli, gli, gli”.
She lives alone and can sometimes be found active throughout the day, until nightfall. He likes to land on poles or stakes, where he watches his prey. Its menu is varied and includes other birds, fish, reptiles or small mammals, such as armadillos.
The gray eagle builds its nests in trees and, like most large birds, reproduces in intervals of more than one year, when it lays only one egg, which weighs approximately 100 grams. Puppies need parental care for six months or more and usually only become adults when they are between two and three years old.
The destruction of places where this eagle lives, such as the cerrado – one of its main habitats – has harmed the feeding, reproduction and housing of the gray eagle. Deforestation, fires and the excessive use of pesticides – toxic substances that fight pests in plantations – also contribute to the destruction of their natural environment. For all these reasons, the gray eagle is seriously threatened with extinction.
