One-third of garbage in Latin America is inappropriately disposed of

Approximately one-third of the waste produced in Latin American and Caribbean countries, according to a report released by the United Nations (UN), was discarded in inappropriate places in 2017.

That's 145,000 tons of waste — the same as the weight of 29 elephants. Brazil is responsible for 25% of this volume.

The research was released at a sustainability event in the city of Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina, last week.

The Latin American region reuses only 10% of waste through recycling, according to the report. The data show that, in Brazil, almost 13 million tons were destined for landfills in 2017.

According to the document, inadequate disposal affects people's health, since open-air garbage can attract rodents, cockroaches and flies — which cause disease in the population.
