Úrsula, can be considered the first novel by black and female authorship in Brazil, in addition to being the first of an anti-slavery nature, it was published in 1859 in the city of São Luís. It is also the inaugural novel of the so-called Afro-Brazilian literature – understood here as the Afro-descendant literary production that thematizes blackness from its own perspective. Organized into twenty chapters, it can be divided into four distinct moments. But it is in the fourth part that the richness of the anti-slavery novel is noticed, through a solidarity Maria Firmina dos Reis for the oppressed, especially women and Africans and Afro-descendants enslaved.
