“What's that big mouth for? To eat you!” Anyone who knows the story of Little Red Riding Hood will certainly remember that conversation. In the tale, the wolf is not a flower that can be smelled, in fact, it is really evil. Because of the fable that ran the world, it is believed that where there is a wolf, there is danger. Will it be? In the case of the maned wolf, it is he who is at risk: that of disappearing from the map!
The maned wolf, according to the researchers, is a shy animal, difficult to be seen. On the other hand, it is very agile: with its long legs, it runs through the vegetation when it smells danger or in search of food. Unlike the big bad wolf, the maned does not eat people. Their food includes small mammals - mainly wild rats -, birds and insects, as well as fruits, in particular the so-called wolf fruit or lobeira, common in the cerrado and in some localities in the northeast and south of the parents. The wolf bears fruit similar to tomatoes all year round and, therefore, is very important for wolves during dry periods.
When it finds its partner, the maned wolf usually has two to four offspring. The male stays with the family until the puppies have some independence. Then he moves away and then it's up to the mother to feed and protect them.
The main cause of the disappearance of the maned wolf is the use of the areas where it lives for agriculture and cattle raising. He is also often the victim of hunting and poisoning because he is considered to be evil, as he sometimes attacks domestic animals.
It is important to know more about the habits of wild animals so that we can conclude how important it is to preserve their habitat.
