Birthplace of the first Brazilian Catholic saint, Frei Galvão, Guaratinguetá owns an extensive tourist collection. Located in the Vale do Paraíba region, the city is approximately 176 km from the capital of São Paulo.
Leveraged by the canonization of Frei Galvão, religious tourism is the city's highlight, being marked by constructions related to the saint, such as the 18th century house where he resided, the Frei Seminary Galvão.
Churches, monasteries and chapels, dating back to the mid-1600s, are part of this baroque ensemble that integrates the Circuito da Fé. The Monastery of Belém is a religious monument built by Germans and has Gregorian chants every morning.
The city's ecological tourism is also strong, thanks to its vast forest located between the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira. Trails, waterfalls, springs, peaks and mountains provide pleasant rural walks and still give space for the practice of extreme sports such as abseiling, hang gliding, paragliding, jeep, mountain biking, among others.
The city also adds a beautiful historical setting marked by constructions from the coffee period in Brazil. Guaratinguetá Railway Station, Municipal Market, old mansions, sumptuous churches, charming manor houses are part of the city's wide architectural complex.
The Cathedral of Santo Antônio stands out for being one of the oldest works in the city. Dating back to 1630, it has an altar in the Vale-Paraiba baroque style harmoniously mixed with the rococo of Minas Gerais.
The cathedral has a life-size image of Frei Galvão inside. The commemorative calendar of the city is quite busy, with festivities such as Carnival (very famous in the city), Holy Week, exhibitions, shows and several other attractions.
