Brooms with heads. That was basically how the first characters of Giramundo were, today one of the most respected puppet theater centers in the world.
But even in the characters that were still very simple, in the 1970s, the “brand that would make the company a style and a reference in the area” was already present, says Marcos Malafaia. According to the group's current artistic director, the main peculiarity of Giramundo since the beginning is “the conception of the puppet as a work of art”. The artist Álvaro Apocalypse was the one who first embraced the idea of theater with puppets, after giving up animation due to the high costs of the process at the time. “If I can't animate the characters, I'll show them live”, he thought, taking a step that would transform him into a great puppet master. The solution became his passion, that of his partner, Terezinha Veloso, and of Maria do Carmo Martins, a friend of the couple.
Starting with Sleeping Beauty, with characters made from a broom, in 1971, the group staged 40 productions for children and adults. For this, more than a thousand dolls of all types, shapes and sizes were made. The puppets, which measure from 30 centimeters to three meters in height, can be rope (manipulated from above), sticks (manipulated from below), counter (from behind) or glove; Made of wood, Styrofoam, papier-mâché or fiberglass.
In the beginning, the artists' house in Greater Belo Horizonte housed the workshop. Afterwards, the group partnered with UFMG for a decade, until becoming independent in 1999. Currently, with 50 members, it has a theater, museum and even a school. Even with the death of Álvaro and Terezinha, in 2003, the work continued, as the rest of the group knew their teachings well. The production of dolls and scenic materials, after all, has always been done in a studio, in an artisanal way. In addition to mastering the manipulation and making of puppets, the artists developed a unique form of presentation: mixing traditional puppet theater with several other languages. Today, for example, the production relies on animations, cinematographic techniques and robotics. “Telling history through movement is the root of Giramundo and puppet theater”, summarizes Malafaia. And he adds: “The theater we do tries to give an answer as to why we live”.
