Film brings both children's jokes and questions about death and technology addiction
Directed by Jill Culton and Todd Wilderman, the film tells the story of teenager Yi, who finds a yeti on her terrace, a creature she affectionately calls Everest. With the help of Peng, a short child who wants to become a basketball player, and the cocky Jin, Yi sets off on a perilous journey to bring his new friend back to his family.
At first glance, the film seems to follow the principle of so many other children's works: lots of magic, mystical creatures, simple and visual jokes - like giant blueberry tossing and belching exaggerated. However, “Abominable” goes beyond that.
Small subtleties, perhaps too subtle for children to notice, make the film much deeper than the trailer itself reveals. The death of a loved one, the difficulty of dealing with the loss, fear, isolation, dependence on technology, prejudice and disrespect for nature are some of the topics covered.
Treated in a simple and delicate way, these themes unfold parallel to the central plot. References to the classics King Kong and Snow White are there. The film has the potential to delight people of all ages. Delight and surprise.
All the characters, including the cruel and wealthy Burnish and loyal zoologist Zara, who set out to capture Everest, show that people are much more than they appear. Even more than the movie itself presents.
Important questions are addressed but not answered. The elders question themselves, wondering what the answer will be for them. However, “Abominable” is a children's animation. Despite the loose ends, it fulfills its role of entertaining and defending respect for nature very well.
