You've probably seen a dragonfly around… It's a pretty cute insect. We often see dragonflies swooping across pools, rivers and lakes as they swoop past and hit their bottoms in the water!
They have a very elongated body: long and thin. The eyes are large, and have two pairs of more or less transparent wings. Delicate insects can be blue, yellow, red, striped, colorless or very colorful.
There are two major groups of this animal. One is the Anisoptera. They are the sturdiest, larger ones, which usually stop with their wings stretched to the side. Wide open!
And the other is called Zygoptera. Dragonflies in this second group are smaller, thinner and slender. And when they are resting on a surface, they usually fold their wings back, close to their bodies.
There are those who say that small fast-flying insects made the Serra de São José, in Minas Gerais, their home because of all the swamps, streams, rivers, marginal lakes and dams. As I've already told you, dragonflies are famous for flying near water. That's when they are adults! Rather, they depend even more on these environments.
