Famous for making fun of everyone, Saci is a fantastic Brazilian entity that has its origins in Tupi-Guarani myths.
The Tupi told the story of Matitaperê, a one-legged curumim with fire-hair who protected the forests. Its function was to guard the wisdom and techniques of preparation and use of beverages and medicines made from medicinal herbs. He was also assigned the domain of the woods and used to confuse people who did not ask him for permission to collect these herbs. The Guaraníes, on the other hand, spoke of Cambai (or Cambay), a small “Indian” with a crooked leg (hence the expression “cambaio”, which means lame) with the power to become invisible, who lived in the woods and protected the animals, hiding them from the hunters.
