Do you know Toni Morrison?

Toni Morrison was the first black woman to win a Nobel Prize for literature. The American writer wrote about themes such as racism in the United States and the condition of the black community, especially about women. Despite her family's financial difficulties, Morrison was a great reader as a child. Some of her favorite authors were Jane Austen and Leo Tolstoy. At home, her father used to tell popular stories from the black community – and this way of telling stories would influence the way he wrote his books.

The first of them was “The Bluest Eye” (1970), which tells the story of a black girl who dreamed of having blue eyes. The book addresses difficult issues, such as dissatisfaction with one's own image, school dropout and teenage pregnancy. Toni Morrison used to say that she wrote “The Bluest Eye” because the book she wanted to read didn't exist yet. The writer got up at dawn, before her two young children woke up, to write.

Years later, one of her children, painter, musician and author Slade Morrison, signed her two children's books with Toni Morrison: "What do you say, Louise?" and “Who wins?”.

Toni Morrison wrote 11 novels, in addition to essays and children's texts. She died on August 5, 2019, aged 88.
