New excavations revealed a site that offered ready-to-eat food
Discoveries in Pompeii, the ancient city of Italy devastated by the eruption of Vesuvius, never stop. This time, archaeologists discovered a kind of fast-food counter in an area nicknamed "Region V".
The counter was found in a thermopoly, a small place used by the poorest residents, who often did not have kitchen utensils at home, to make meals or drink. Thus, the food was sold ready for consumption. The menu offered: bread with fish, cheese or lentils, and wine.
The thermopoly found in recent excavations is 2,000 years old and decorated with frescoes. The discovery was disclosed by Massimo Osanna, director general of the archaeological site.
In 79 d. a., Pompeii was reached by the eruption of Vesuvius. It is not known exactly how many people died. However, the recovery of bodies would indicate a number between 2,000 to 4,000 victims. In any case, the city never recovered from the catastrophe.
