The cheese produced in Minas Gerais is recognized as a cultural and intangible heritage of Brazil and the State
There are those who say that Minas cheese cannot be missing from the good Minas Gerais table. A cheese with coffee, cheese with guava [known as Romeo and Juliet], cheese bread or even complementing an exquisite dish, has already become a guaranteed recipe in Minas Gerais. The state's traditional food is second to none for the most refined imported cheeses. They have the Canastra, the Serro, the fresh, the semi-cura, the standard type Minas, the curd. There are so many options that it is even difficult to say which one is more delicious. It's no wonder that this delicacy is so successful and has already become a Brazilian and intangible cultural heritage of Minas Gerais.
Since 2008, the typical way of preparing artisanal cheeses from the Serro and Serra da Canastra region has been recognized as Brazil's cultural heritage by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan).
The title only proved what the miners already knew. “The cheese produced here is really the best. I am in love with this delight. There is no equal in the world”, comments Rodrigo Gomes de Oliveira, a cheese shop owner in the Mercado Central.
In his shop, there are cheeses of all kinds. According to the merchant, the best seller is in the Canastra region. “The people from Minas like cheese anyway, but what everyone likes and buys the most here in the store is the traditional Canastra”, he reveals.
In addition to being successful among Minas Gerais families, the cheese produced in Minas Gerais is desired by those who do not live in the state. Rodrigo says that it has become a tradition to carry cheese from Minas in your luggage. “I have several customers who buy here to take to other states in Brazil. A friend of mine opened a wine store in Vitória, Espírito Santo, and took some cheese from here to sell there. It was so successful that today he only sells cheese from Minas”, he says.
