How did the carnival masks come about?

Carnival masks appeared in the Italian city of Venice, more precisely in the 17th century. They were used by nobles who wanted to hide their true identity to skip carnival with the people. The search for anonymity motivated the creation of colorful, fun and creative masks.

The tradition of wearing a mask at carnival was not restricted to Italy. The Portuguese also incorporated this custom and brought it to Brazil. Until today, people make carnival masks to skip carnival in the street, in schools or in salons.

Curiosities about carnival masks

  • Did you know that the first Carnival mask dates back to 30,000 years BC and was manufactured and ornamented to be used in celebrations, cults and rituals of primitive peoples?
  • In Ancient Egypt, people believed that placing a mask on the face of the dead helped them to pass on to eternal life.
  • In China, masks were used to ward off evil spirits.
  • In Greece, they were used in their religious ceremonies.
  • The oldest document on the use of masks in Venice dates from 2 May 1268.
  • Another, dated February 22, 1339, forbade the masked to roam the city streets at night. However, its use was allowed throughout the carnival, except on religious festivals and when entering churches.
  • In Italy, the "court jesters", artists of laughter, became Harlequin, Pulcinella, Pierrot and Colombina, characters that inspired the Carnival of Venice, and the masks had the power to reveal or hide feelings.
  • In man's need to beautify himself and to transform himself, in the 15th century Venice, the first ball of masks, "Ball Masquê", where the use of the mask was also necessary due to constant conflicts politicians. The masked Courtiers joked, confident of anonymity, pouring out all their repressed impulses, freeing them from social norms.
  • In Venice, masks also became decorative pieces, becoming the main economic activity in the region.
