THE legend of Iara, also known in several regions of Brazil as the legend of the mother of water, is part of the Brazilian folklore and of unworthy origin, but precisely in the northern region of Brazil (Amazon).
The mermaid Iara is a legend of Brazilian folklore, so it's very special.Iara or Uiara (from tupi ‘y-îara “the one who lives in the water”) is a beautiful mermaid who first lives in the Amazon River, but later the legend spread and she is seen throughout our Brazilian territory.
Fishermen from all over Brazil, in fresh or salt water, tell stories of young men who gave in to the charms of the beautiful Iara and they ended up drowning in passion, or rather, to this day it is unknown what happens to those who give in to her charms, because her body is never again found. Some authors believe that the mermaid did not kill its victims, but led them to their palaces. underwater and using her magical powers she made men survive below of water. Still others say that several Indians maintained a love relationship with the mermaid, and would have returned to tell the story.

The Indians of the Amazon Region tell that Iara was a warrior Indian, of exuberant beauty. All her brothers were jealous of her, as her father, the chief of the tribe, praised her a lot. One day, the brothers decided to kill Iara, but she heard the plan and fought back, killing all the brothers in her own defense.
After that, Iara fled into the woods. Her father, enraged, pursued her and managed to capture her, applying a punishment: Iara was thrown into the Solimões River to drown. However, the fish saved her and, through the effects of the full moon, she was transformed into a mermaid.
Iara, Sereia Iara, or even Mãe-d'água, according to Brazilian folklore, is a beautiful mermaid that lives in the Amazon River, her skin is brown, has long green hair, and brown eyes.
