Brazilian National Anthem Day Activities

• Distribute a copy of the National Anthem to each student (or pair) or ask them to copy it from the textbook or handout if they have one;
• Ask them to underline the words they don't know, the meaning and make a list in the notebook;
• Ask them to look it up in the dictionary, and write in the notebook, remembering that the dictionary presents several definitions for the same entry, they must choose the one that is closest to the meaning in the phrase;

Brazilian National Anthem Day Activities – Mural with surveys

• Arrange the room in a circle for discussion of the research brought in by students. It is important that students talk about the research results.

What did they learn? Why is language formal? When was the hymn written?

• Set up a mural and post the surveys. Suggest that students read their peers' research.

Brazilian National Anthem Day Activities – Using dictionary

Arrange the room in pairs. Before starting work with the dictionary, explain the meaning of the words Ipiranga (Rio where on the banks D. Pedro I proclaimed the Independence of Brazil) and Cruzeiro (Constellation of Cruzeiro do Sul), then perform the following steps:

• Encourage understanding of the hymn's stanzas, for that, promote an oral exploration of each passage: Did you understand the stanza? Was it easier to understand after working the meaning of a few words?
