Australian drops 5-year-old son in current to save youngest daughter

Among the tens of thousands of deaths from the tsunami tragedy, family dramas multiply, but the story of Australian Jillian Searle stands out amidst the chaos and destruction. She had to make a decision that no one should have had to make: choose which of her two children would survive.

Jillian was clutching her children — Lachie, age 5, and Blake, age 2 — in the current of the ensuing tsunami. she shot down on the island of Phuket, Thailand, but realized that the three would die as she was sinking.

- I knew I had to drop one of them and I thought it would be better to drop the eldest - said yesterday, already at the airport in Sydney, Australia.

All this took place under the gaze of the children's father, Brad, who watched the scene helplessly. Jillian saw Lachie, who can't swim, try to keep his head above water and thought he was dead. But two hours later he found him alive and uninjured floating above a door.
