Word Formation Processes: Derivation and Composition

The Portuguese language has two Law Suit basics of word formation: derivation and composition.

Word Formation Processes: derivation and composition.

Derivation consists of modifying a certain primitive word by adding affixes. Note some types of derivation:

  • Prefix Derivation: When adding a prefix to a primitive word

Examples:reto read, inhappy, desto do.

  • Suffix Derivation: When adding a suffix to a primitive word

Examples: realmind, leafact, happymind.

  • Prefix or Suffix Derivation: When a prefix and a suffix are independently added to the primitive word, that is, without the presence of one of the affixes, the word still has meaning.

Examples: Fromloyalmind,Inhappymind.

____

THE composition it consists in the formation of words by joining two of them. There are two types of formation through composition, see below:

  • Juxtaposition: It occurs when the elements are just juxtaposed without loss of any phoneme.

Examples: Wardrobes, hobby, Monday;

  • Agglutination: It occurs when elements are agglutinated for the formation of a word, that is, one of them loses its sound unit, that is, phoneme.

Examples: Aguardente (there was the loss of the “a”). Plateau, *there was the loss of the “o”.
