Just like a dog or a cat, the silkworm can be of several breeds. Each breed produces a slightly different silk, some with more quality, others in greater quantity. Therefore, scientists cross races to try to find a pet that produces the best material for man.
All silk is naturally white, but you've probably seen clothes in this fabric in many other colors. This is because after the yarn is already streaked and dry, it can be dyed, keeping its characteristic shine.
