The dolphin's dorsal fin can be compared to a fingerprint. As its shape, size, and scars vary from boto to botanical, scientists can use it to identify each animal individually, which allows you to follow it over time and discover a lot about its behavior and mode of life.
Because of this, scientists try to photograph each dolphin that appears in a given region, especially its dorsal fin, to assemble a catalog of photographs of the sighted animals. So, when a boto appears in the place, you can tell if it is new there or not. In the catalog, each animal is given a code, such as a name or a number.
Known as photo identification, this method has one big advantage: it allows scientists to work exclusively with the animals' natural marks, without having to capture them or mark them with tattoos or platelets numbered. It is currently used in the study of many species of marine mammals, such as the right whale, humpback whale and orca. With it, it is possible to find out, in the case of porpoises, for example, how many animals there are in the region, if they are always the same people who frequent the place, what are their displacements and what are the associations between they.
